The Galleria La Pigna is an artistic and cultural center located in the Palazzo Maffei Marescotti, venue of the Vicary, close to the Pantheon. The ancient palace was built in 1580 and went through a series of owners and uses for centuries. It was purchased in 1906 by the Vatican. In 1966, Pope Paul VI deemed it would be the venue of the UCAI (Unione Artisti Cattolici), an association of artists who could show their work in a gallery entitled La Pigna (the pinecone). This show, The State of the Art, will exhibit paintings, sculpture and photography in the genre of current contemporary art.
"The exhbition will feature works which are considered important examples of current contemporary art which go beyond mere objective representation of reality, and which through different expressive codes, communicate to the observer messages to decode. These artworks create a representative landscape of what is happening in the contemporary artistic panorama today, and beyond their aesthetic balance and objective beauty, have the ability to offer imaginary visions which lead to reflection and a detachment from the rational world." Monica Ferrarini, Curatrice e Critica d'Arte
